Good News

HackMii Installer 0.8 has been released, which installs the Homebrew Channel 1.0.8 and BootMii beta6.  What is so significant is that as long as you install/update to it, you can update to System Menu 4.3 without fear of removal.

HBC 1.0.8 can be installed on System Menu 4.2 or lower using the Bannerbomb exploit or updated via an automatic promt in the HBC itself.  I recommend you update if planning on using 4.3 or not as it also adds extra functionality such as theming and USB2 support.  Alternatively, if you are already on 4.3 you can still use one of the other exploits to install HBC 1.0.8 and once again softmod you Wii.  It is important to update to HBC 1.0.8 PRIOR to updating from 4.2 to 4.3

Not So Good News

System Menu 4.3 will still remove and stub the custom IOSs on an already softmodded Wii, so you will need to follow the guide to re-softmod after the update.  The guide has been updated to include any significant steps in softmodding a 4.3 Wii and also using the latest custom IOS installers.

More Updates

Also released is Waninkoko's cIOS Installer rev20, although rev21 is on it's way too.  This revision introduces the ability to install IOSs to multiple slots, such as IOS249 with 38 as a base and IOS250 with 57 as a base with base 56 and IOS250 with base 38.  IOS56 is the best choice at the moment as it has the speed of IOS57 and the compatibility of IOS37.  I only installed to slot IOS250 as a redundancy.

Hermes cIOS Installer 5.1 is out, although the only significant change is the recoding, no extra functionality has been introduced.

I have tested updating the HBC to 1.0.8, followed by an system update to System Menu 4.3, followed by a re-softmod with Waninkoko's rev20 and Hermes v4 & v5.1.  The method is documented in the guide.

Although the update is not necessary (as their is no additional functionality introduced) System 4.3 can now be isntalled without fear of breaking the softmod.  Alternatively, Waninkoko has released an updater that installs all the components without removing anything, but I have not tried this and recommend updating via the proper Nintendo method.  If you wish to remain on 4.2, you can also use NUSDownloader to update any out-of-date channels.

The intention of this website is to give an overview of softmodding the Nintendo Wii.  I have attempted to explain how this is done by sharing my experiences in hacking the Wii and the guides I used to do it.  In essence, this site is intended to be a hub of information, bringing together the most useful resources I have found.

Although I have included some help articles of my own, their purpose is to advise on a certain aspect of softmodding or homebrew applications, not as a complete guide.  There are already good guides on the Internet explaining how to pretty much everything and so I have not felt the need to repeat them, but instead have referred to the ones I have found the most useful.

Please note that this website is for advise only and not guaranteed to work 100% for everybody.  Where I have referred to a website, I take no responsibility for its accuracy, effectiveness or support.  These page merely document what I did and what works for me (but should work for others).

DISCLAIMER: This site is for homebrew and backup purposes only.  I do not condone piracy and back-ups should only be made if you own an original copy of the game.  It is illegal to softmod the Wii to play a game you do not own.

Updated for System Menu 4.3

There are various guides on the Internet explaining how to softmod the Wii, and for the most part a good up-to-date guide is difficult to find.  I considered writing one documenting the steps I followed to successfully hacking my Wii but then I thought "why reinvent the wheel?"

Here is what I recommend - Complete Softmod Guide - "This guide will explain everything you can do with your Wii step by step, also dropping helpful tips."

The Complete Softmode Guide is a comprehensive guide that takes you through every stage of hacking the Wii and more.  It covers all system menu versions and regions.  I suggest at least a quick read through the entire site as it covers all aspects of hacking from the background information, initial hacking and available hacking homebrew applications.  However, to softmod the Wii there are only a few sections you need to concentrate on...

Note that the CSG currently recommends not to update to System Menu 4.3.  If you are on 4.2 or under I recommend installing the Homebrew Channel before updating.  Once the it's installed, the newest version of the HackMii install will work with System Menu 4.3 - the problem is just initially installing the HBC as the BannerBomb hack does not currently work with the update.
